A journey in the opposite direction from our “usual choices.”
In an age when algorithms have such a strong pull, it’s easy to become biased toward what we already know. So why not make a different choice, at least on our days off?
This time, I put on a backpack I’m not used to carrying and took a series of local trains to a basin in Fukushima, northern Japan, surrounded by magnificent layers of mountains.
The Beginning of The Opposite Journey → here

Perhaps long winters make people more likely to sharpen their inner philosophy. It was a surprise to find agriculture and art coexisting naturally in this region.
One older local, a regular at the café, grows 100 kinds of vegetables as a serious farmer and makes art after work. During the winter or rainy afternoons, while the farm work is quiet, he often draws and paints the vegetables he has carefully nurtured. Sometimes, particularly good pieces are taken to his favorite local café or izakayas. He showed me some of his paintings displayed here. His drawing style was particularly delicate, in contrast to his loud voice and my image of someone working in agriculture amid vast nature.
The local skateboard shop was in an old Japanese house passed down from his grandpa, with its original shape intact. In the middle of nowhere, about a two-hour bus ride away. The garage was painted with large street art inspired by the surrounding mountains, giving it a skate shop feel, while a traditional Japanese noren curtain hung at the entrance, with a somewhat nostalgic feel.
The owner said he preferred to preserve its shape and “air” as a sign of respect. Their young skate crew captures not only skateboarding on the streets, but also daily farm work in the nature around the neighbourhood—changing the soil, planting, and handcrafting traditional pieces passed down through generations. They create the story of their daily farm work, vast nature, and skateboarding, turning it into a modern film.
Rather than go beyond the mountains to seek the outside world, people here seem more inclined to grow and refine things within the inner world. Continuing and polishing one thing over generations, instead of changing and overwriting it.

First ever self shoot with pro kit at @marufukucorporation in @for_a_language_to_come

Photobook “New Habitations: From North to East, 11 Years After 3.11” was quietly placed there.
Agriculture and art, architecture passed down by previous generations. The next generation respects them, while mixing with their subtle DNA. Without even calling it “tradition,” inheriting and cherishing what those before us created has quietly become part of everyday life.
In and out, everything is about balance at the end of the day. But these days, it feels like there’s a strong pull toward the outside, always pushing us to go beyond and reach further. In our everyday lives, it’s easy to simply go with that flow, and before we know it, we may become biased toward the outside without even noticing.
This journey taught me how to find that balance. Simply because I came in the “opposite” direction.
Algorithms have such a strong pull these days that it’s easy to surround ourselves with the “usual choices” and become biased toward what we already know.
Far from the familiar ocean view, I discovered something special within the inner world, surrounded by layers of mountains. I really enjoyed a new style of “time off”—stepping off the usual holiday algorithms and going in the opposite direction.
A late summer holiday, just like that.
